I have wondered for a while now about why the Himalayas are so high. It seems that once India broke away from Gondwana, it moved north at the incredibly high speed of 20 centimeters a year. This article says that the reason for this was that the deepest part of Indian plate was melted away, so it moved north quickly, slammed into Asia and created the Himalayas.
